THE OLD GUARD

Synopsis
A group of mercenaries, all centuries-old immortals with the ablity to heal themselves, discover someone is onto their secret, and they must fight to protect their freedom.

PS( I have something for you at the bottom of this page😉😉)
In the opening scene, the moment Andy, Brooker, Ricky and Joe got gunned down right after they all walked into the room, I screamedddd. Funny thing is, I didn’t even read the synopsis before watching so I didn’t know that they were immortal. Although I watched the trailer, I didn’t get that in the trailer, maybe because I didn’t pay much attention to it. One thing is, I do not really watch action movies simply because I don’t like seeing people stab themselves, I do not like the sight of open wounds and excess bleeding, so, I really do not subscribe to action movie. But The Old Guard was everywhere, almost everyone was talking about it and the trailer was quite captivating and so I decided to see the movie and dear readers…. I was WOWED

Review
Let me put this out quickly, Andy(Charlize Theron) is such a Badass…Whattt!!! I totally loved her charisma.
This guys have supposedly been doing good by saving the lives of people for decades. But immortality is their sole superpower: they don’t have super-strength, or the ability to fly or be invisible. They are essentially no stronger and smarter than any of the ex-special-forces people that they wind up getting into fights with. It’s just that when you shoot or stab them, the wound heals up and they start over.

Despite the familiarity in action, The Old Guard managed to be both very grounded and very entertaining, the infusion of expectations and twists made it interesting to follow. The movie was a bit predictable, at least ,you would be able to predict the resolution. Somethings in this movie weren’t predictable, the betrayal, who took part in it, even the incidents that came together to make up the resolution. The movie would keep you at the edge of your seat as it would keep you curious of what’s coming next.
Surprisingly, I didn’t find this movie boring at all. I kept looking forward to the next scene and the next and the next. I love the choice of locations, these locations had some details in them that even added to the story.

The casting was brilliant. The casts tried their possible best to interpret their characters well and this made it easy for the viewers to see through each character and understand their stories well. Nile Freeman(played by Kiki Layne) was so good with her character. I feel like I connected with her more in this movie. I totally loved her character, she was young, feirce, smart and determined. Loved loved it.
The scene where Nile and Andy got rid of merrick was just crazyyy!!! I didn’t see it coming but I definitely loved it.

Verdict
This movie deserves 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ but because I feel like we need some mythology explanation,I would rate this movie 4.5/5. Although, they kinda gave us an explanation in the movie,I just feel that explanation wasn’t convincing and it didn’t give us an in-depth knowledge of why and how they are immortal. I do hope we get a better explanation in the sequel, if there is going to be one. Apart from that, The Old Guard is a brilliant movie and I’m sure you would enjoy watching as much as I did.

The Old Guard is available on Netflix.

DESPERADOS

Synopsis

A panicked young woman (Nasim Pedrad) and her two best friends (Anna Camp & Sarah Burns) fly to Mexico to delete a ranting email she sent to her new boyfriend. On arrival, they run into her former beau (Lamorne Morris), who soon gets caught up in their frantic scheme.

Review
First of, the idea of Nasim Pedrad’s character travelling all the way to Mexico just to delete an email, was a crazy one of me. I have seen different movies whereby different ladies execute crazy ideas and all but this lady’s level crazy or should I say Wesley’s level of desperation is just….Unbelieveable.
There was something Nasim Pedrad did with her character that made it so easy, relaxing and enjoyable to watch. I mean, she was funny, crazy, there was just this vibe that she had. The dialogues in this film were not complex at all and the simplicity of these dialogues in turn made the movie engaging and easy to follow.
But…

On the long long, there were few insensitive satire, from the immature email sent from an adult to simply not just sending another email to say “I apologize, I thought you ghosted me” or some decent explanation, then the pedophile humour and few exaggerated scenes here and there, all of these made the story fall flat.

Verdict
Apart from the insensitive satire in this film, the comedy was good, good choice of location and styling. Great cast I must say. Desperados is a film you would enjoy watching if you can over look some of the obvious exaggerations and loopholes.

Would you be seeing this film if you haven’t?
If you have, what do you think?

SELFIE DAD

Synopsis.
Ben Marcus “Michael Jr.”, a former stand-up comic in a midlife crisis, tries to become a social media star until he and his family are radically challenged by the Bible.Ben Marcus, who is a husband and father finds himself caught in the throes of a mid-life crisis. Ben has a lot to be thankful for, but despite everything he has achieved, he simply isn’t happy. He decides that the best way to fill the hole in his life is to fulfill his long set aside dream of becoming a comedian and in order to jump start his comedic career, Ben decides to start a YouTube channel.Much to his surprise (and his daughter’s embarrassment), a video of Ben goes viral! Just like that, his new career as “Selfie Dad” takes off, and before Ben knows it, he’s a social media phenomenon!

Review
Selfie Dad is a nice family comedy and I love the fact that it’s Christian based.i love the perfect mixture of christian and comedy and drama. This movie is filled with laughter and lots of lessons to be learnt. I love the storyline of this movie and the powerful message that it was created to deliver. This movie encourages the teaching of the scripture, it encourages dads to explore the Bible with their families and open up to the changes and growth that comes with the constant studying of the scriptures.
I enjoyed the realism of the reaction of Christians when their love for God’s word is challenged and how it developed their transition away from externally forced shame to an embracing appreciation of the transformative value of God’s presence in the lives of the family. This movie reminds the viewers that any success or achievement outside God is without peace. Ben had achieved a lot but he still felt lost, he could feel that something was missing in his home.

A part of the story line of this movie that really captivated me is the part where Mickey, a friend of Ben who is training to be a pastor and also writing a book, saw Ben as a man who is perfect and has his spiritual life all figured out and wanted to write his book based on Ben’s Christian life. Unknowingly to Mickey, Been has no idea of what was doing with his life. This part of this reminded the viewers that they are a lot a public figures that the public look up to, expecting them to be perfect and flawless when it comes to their faith, career and family. But the truth is, Everyone is still figuring life out, and would only get lost if God is outside the picture.

Verdict.
Apart from the fact that the pacing of this film was a bit slow at the beginning , Selfie Dad is a movie that you would enjoy watching. The choice of songs was brilliant, the acting was good too. I would rate Selfie Dad a 3.5/5.

FEEL THE BEAT

Synopsis
April left her hometown in Wisconsin to be a Broadway dancer in New York City. Driven by her ambition, she is hardworking and committed. She is ready to do whatever it takes to make her mark, even if that means stealing a cab from an old lady on a rainy day, and that’s exactly what she does on the day of the biggest audition of her life. She reaches the studio on time and gives a brilliant performance. She is almost chosen for the part, but then the old lady comes back in the picture and it turns out that she is Ruth Zimmer, one of the biggest names in Broadway.

April tries to make her understand just how important the job is for her, but this only makes matters worse when she accidentally pushes Ruth off the stage. It officially marks the end of her career, but on top of that, the whole thing is recorded by someone and it starts trending on social media. The only escape for her now is her hometown, where her failure is still a secret. Her fate takes a turn for the better when she is offered to train a group of amateur dancers to win a competition.

Review
This movie is a bit predictable, but that doesn’t ruin the story that it tells. The story talks about love, redemption and hope. Although, the storyline of this movie isn’t something new, there are a couple of things that I love about this movie. I love the fact that April(Sofia Carson) who happen to be a feisty lady didn’t get away with her attitude. She paid for it and had to redeem herself through hard work, a change of attitude, and commitment.

I also love that the movie didn’t shift its gaze from the main characters which are the kids and April. Although, during the course of exploring the story, we met more characters like Nick(April’s high school sweetheart) April’s Father, Mrs. Barb( April’s dance teacher when she was a little girl) the kid’s parents and many more characters. I mean, we met diverse characters but this film was still able to maintain the fact that this story is about April and the kids.
Another intriguing aspect of this film is that the writer didn’t allow April and Nick’s history to affect the story. The writer didn’t make it about their love life. Fine, their love life came up at some point but this didn’t determine the endpoint of the film.

Talking about the dance routine in this movie, it was believable, not perfect, but still enjoyable. I’m saying this because when the kids were introduced, the viewers were made to understand that they didn’t have the best dance teacher to coach them until April came around. So when April started taking these kids, magic didn’t just happen, the kids didn’t suddenly have the best dance moves or instant learning ability. The process was believable, it was realistic and it was worth it.
This movie also showcased the bond and happiness that comes with kids genuinely spending time with a teacher that gets them
Let me not forget to mention how this movie brilliantly showcases the beauty of a small town coming together to work towards a certain goal. The songs in this movie were brilliantly selected, the cinematography, the lighting, the costumes were tremendous.
Allow me to talk about how effortlessly gorgeous Sofia Carson was looking😍 in this movie, I was like

If you aren’t careful, her skin, her hair, her style, her beauty would distract you.

Verdict
In these depressing and sad times, FEEL THE BEAT is your go-to movie to light up your day. It gives you a reprieve from the crumbling world outside our doors these days, It would definitely leave you with a smile and a great feeling. I would rate this movie a 4 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ because it incredibly lived up to its purpose.

If you’ve seen FEEL THE BEAT, what do you think? Was it a hit 👍or a miss👎 for you?

MISS JUNETEENTH

Synopsis
Turquoise Jones is a single mom who holds down a household, a rebellious teenager, and pretty much everything that goes down at Wayman’s BBQ & Lounge. Turquoise is also a bona fide beauty queen as she was once crowned Miss Juneteenth, a title commemorating the day slaves in Texas were freed–two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Turquoise, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter, Kai, to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else.

Review
Miss Juneteenth is a film defined by its gentle beauty and simplicity as it charts the life of Turquoise Jones, who’s navigating the choppy waters of motherhood, being poor, and pouring her own dreams into her daughter, Kai, who is reluctant at best about participating in the Miss Juneteenth pageant that Turquoise herself won as a teenager. This film is too smart for just any grandstanding.Apart from the simplicity of this film, the mother-daughter relationship crafted between Kai( Alexis Chikaeze)and Turquoise(Nicole Beharie) made me fall in love with the story. There was tenderness and kindness between them even when their relationship grew difficult during the preparations for the pageant. We were also made to see the relationship Turquoise shared with her own mother, Charlotte (Lori Hayes), a fiercely religious woman who struggles to hide her alcoholism.

Nichole Beharie, undoubtedly, anchored this film, she gave an award-winning performance with zero cliches and a wonderfully fresh look at motherhood. The same thing with Kendrick Sampson, who played the character, Ronnie, It was a marvel to watch an actor understand that the female lead should be our focus and his eyes must reflect what the audience needs to understand about her.

Verdict
The storyline was well written as it would keep you captivated even as the characters developed. The attachment and tension between Turquoise and Kai was well portrayed , the acting was realistic , the story didn’t try too hard to convince the viewers. Miss Juneteenth isn’t just a movie that celebrates a specific swath of Black life but a tremendous portrait of what it means to live, fully and unapologetically. I would be rating this film a 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5.

SHORT FILMS ON YOUTUBE: IT DOESN’T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE LONG TO MAKE SENSE

Yeah, you read the title of the blog post well and I’m sure you would agree with me when I say that some short film hit harder than a long movie of about an hour or more. The length of a Film doesn’t and shouldn’t even determine the value of a film. Films that are 2 hours flop while some do great, films that are about an hour and some minute flops while some turn out well, same thing happens with short films that are about 30minutes long or even less.
Here are some short films (2019/2020) that I have seen on YouTube and and I believe are worth your time and data.

  1. TOKUNBO(2019)

This film is based on a true life story and it was directed, written and produced by Rogba Arimoro and it features Ibrahim Suleiman and Kiki Omeli. This film is 12 minutes long and it’s has a one dimensional features because it was shot with a Samsung Galaxy S9. This film tells a story of a loving couple, their love life, their struggle to have a second child and their ability to pull through their problems together as a couple. Life was good for this couple until they both received a news that made them drift apart and finally separated them. (Phew!! I I’m trying not to spoil this film for you)
This film revolves around their car which is a second hand car(that explains the title) . This car shared in their happiness, their pain, misunderstanding and arguments. All acts in this film were done in the car and the film did so well as the story was told through several years in a car and still managed to not lose it feel.
Tokunbo highlighted a message that simply says, every car has it own story.

2. A LOVE STORY(2020)

This film is 1 minutes, 59 minutes long and it features Lota Chukwu and Efa Iwara. This film started off with Lota telling us that Valentine’s day has never meant anything to her until this present day as she was going to be spending it with the love of her life. Lota looked so excited while setting up for the picnic until she started texting him and she didn’t get a response. After waiting for 5 hours, the supposed “Love of her life” gave her a call and this call changed the film, including the title.

Within the space of 2 minutes, the story was well told, straightforward, unpredictable and enjoyable. Good choice of music, location, good lighting and cinematography.kudos to the writer of this film, the concluding part caught me unaware.

3. THE QUALITY TIME WIFE(2019)

This 15 minutes film is by Ayoope TV and it features Ayo Davis and Ope Davis. This production reflects on the love language“Quality Time” . In this film, the wife clearly appreciated Quality time over other love languages like, Act of service/kindness, Gift giving, Physical touch and words of affirmation but because her husband didnt understand or didn’t take his time to find out what her love language is, he kept cancelling their dates because of work and just kept buying her gifts to apologize and this led to them having arguments. The message this film was created to pass is clear, “know the love language or languages of your partner”

  1. BAYI (2020)

This film by Diana Russet tells the story of underaged girls who are being forced into early marriages and the challenges they face ranging from early child birth to Vesticovagina Fistilla (VVF)
The Ex BBN’19 housemate, Diane Russet sends a powerful message through this film and the viewers are been reminded that young girls out there are still being forced into marriage. This short film features Diana Russet herself, Sir Dee( another BBN’19 ex housemate), Mariam Kayode, Tope Olowoniyan, Daniel Atteh, Lynn Musa among others.Bayi is 37 minutes long and it is totally worth your time.

Which of these short films have you seen?
Which would you be watching?

LOVE LIFE

Created by Sam Boyd, premiered on the HBO Max streaming service

Love Life is an American romantic comedy anthology web television series which follows the story of Darby Carter who embarks on a journey from first to lasting love, which includes the people she meets along the way. Darby lives with Sara (Zoë Chao) and Mallory (Sasha Compère), diverse roommates whose lives are vastly more complicated and perhaps more involving than hers, the casting for Darby’s roommates/BFFs is similar to The Bold Type where we have two best friends of a different color.
Darby’s love life kicks off in 2012 with aspiring journalist Augie (Devs co-star Jin Ha). Along the way, we meet her first love (a bratty high schooler played by American Vandal veteran Griffin Gluck), a leering boss ( played by the great Scoot McNairy), her needy mother (Hope Davis) and other functionaries.

Launched on May 27, 2020

Review
Love Life was very refreshing to watch because it was very witty, deep, heartwarming, satisfying, and relatable. I loved the fact that Anna Kendrick’s character Darby wasn’t portrayed as a zealous woman who keeps struggling to reach her goal but keeps failing…Although at the beginning of the season, we saw her struggle to achieve her career goals but as the season continued, we saw Darby walk her way towards success as she eventually owned a art gallery.

Another remarkable thing is how frequently Kendrick held the show together. She was funny even when the scripts weren’t because Kendrick is a master of slightly askew line-readings.
The Pitch Perfect star has always had a way of bringing a sarcastic bite to her performances without it seeming overly affected or try-hard, and this was exactly the case with her performance in Love Life. As the episodes unfold, you begin to see what lies behind the walls Darby has put up around herself through failed relationship after failed relationships after the failed tryst, which means Kendrick really had to bring it when expressing those tender, fragile parts of Darby’s heart

The twists, turns, and complications which arise as Darby searches for the one person she can settle down with (and luckily, blessedly, the premiere episode gives us a good reason to believe she will succeed in finding “the one”) help break with expectations and keep you hooked. The season is cut into chapters, with each episode named after the person Darby is dating or, as we see later in the season, a person whose relationship to Darby is undergoing profound and transformative growing pains which illuminate within Darby a part of herself she needs to work on in order to become the person ready to accept the kind of love we see she deserves. This, in combination with Kendrick anchoring the show in a reliably strong, seemingly effortless performance, makes Love Life both a breezy, binge-able watch as well as a worthwhile viewing endeavor.
You should check out Love Life as it is different, all 10 episodes are available for viewing on HBO,I mean, you get to watch all 10 episodes at once, no waiting and it has been renewed for a second season.

NdaniTV PHASES S2: TRAILER REACTION

After an exciting first season in 2019, NdaniTV releases the official trailer for the second season of Phases, an original series that follows the life of Sunkanmi, a young man trying to find the balance between love and friendship while starting out as a tech entrepreneur.
The main cast will be making a comeback, featuring: Tosin Ibitoye as Sunkanmi, Tomike Adeoye as Tunde, Tobi Bakare as Jeje, Adebukola Oladipupo as Ini, Asa’ah Samuel as Gbugbemi, Elma Mbadiwe as Naomi. Also joining the cast this season is Shalewa Ashafa as ‘Wande’, and Joshua Richard as ‘Preye’

Reaction

The trailer started with Sukanmi saying “Hey, it’s been quite a minute” I was like 😏 quite a minute indeed. Even the smile on his face was saying“guys that was a joke”. After the statement by Sukanmi, a lot of things started happening on my screen.
I could see Gbugbemi and Ini hanging out, meeting five times a week and it doesn’t look like they are in a relationship because with a statement Gbugbemi made, we could tell that they were just seeing each other causally, Ini doesn’t look happy with Gbugbemi and Sukanmi didn’t look about Ini and Gbugbemi. I feel Ini is only hanging out with Gbugbemi so she can still be around Sukanmi.

After the drama between Jeje and Tunde, and her mother begging and telling her to stay with Jeje because a woman has to help a man grow so she has to overlook his mistakes; Now we see Tunde in this season giving Jeje another chance but this time with terms and conditions. She didn’t look happy with him and I think their wedding is still on hold, they are probably still trying to get over the incident. Later on in the trailer, we see Jeje ordering a drink for a lady that isn’t Tunde, although he didn’t look comfortable but it it that Jeje hasn’t learnt his lessons yet??

Looks like Jeje would have to compete for Tunde’s heart in this season as she would be meeting a new guy(Preye) and this guy doesn’t look like a gentle adversary;this guy tried to move closer to Tunde and she was like, “You’re invading my private space” and he was like“this is a public place”. He even went ahead to tell Tunde that she shouldn’t limit her options simply because she is already engaged. I was like interesting!! now, there is someone to put Jeje on his toes because later on in the trailer, Tunde was shown all dressed up for an outing that isn’t with Jeje.

Apparently, Sukanmi is still with Naomi but still likes Ini and in this season would get involved with Wande. There was just a lot going on in this trailer, Tunde giving Jeje another chance but also hanging out with someone else, Ini still sticking around Sunkanmi under Gbugbemi’s shadow, Naomi still in the picture but still isn’t a big part of Sukanmi’s life yet.

I think we are going to see a lot of drama in this season but I do hope that the story and the characters grow better than it did in season one. I also do hope that we get longer episodes unlike in the first season.

The trailer looked attractive, engaging, intense and I would definitely be seeing it
What do you think about the trailer?
What do you think about the addition of new characters?
If season one didn’t impress you, would you still be watching this season?

THE HIGH NOTE

Synopsis

Set in the dazzling world of the LA music scene comes the story of Grace Davis, a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights. Maggie is Grace’s overworked personal assistant who’s stuck running errands but still aspires to her childhood dream of becoming a music producer. When Grace’s manager presents her with a choice that could alter the course of her career, Maggie and Grace come up with a plan that could change their lives forever.

Review

This movie took viewers on a fun ride with a pleasant diversion. Not only did Tracee Ellis Ross(Rainbow Johnson from the black-ish) kill her role as Grace Davis , she also brought out her true personality. You could tell that she was herself in this movie. Also the Fifty shades of grey star, Dakota Johnson played the character Maggie and she did a very outstanding job of portraying Maggie and bringing out her inner self as well. The hype about Calvin Harrison is justified as his appearance in this movie as David is appealing. He sang really well and is very likable.

Each character had a passion and goal that they wanted to accomplish but kept battling with their insecurities. It was fun to follow each character’s path and see where life takes them. I really loved watching Icecube play Jack(Grace Davis’s manager) in this movie. He was hilarious and he lightened up the mood even during intense moments.I loved watching he and Grace interact, you really get to feel that there are years of friendship between them, it wasn’t something that they had to oversell. One of the things I really enjoyed about the high note is the theme of following your dreams but also realizing that you have to hustle to achieve your dreams. A lot of times, we see in films, there’s this like the big moment that just pops up out of nowhere and they have this chance and they find this success but in reality, we do know that more stuff had to have transpired before that, but in the high note, you get to see Maggi work multiple Jobs, hustle, joggle her day job as Grace Davis assistant and her night job as a music producer. Big shout out to the costume designer, the designer had Tracee looking fly.

One other thing I loved about this film was the music, it made the movie relaxing and refreshing to watch. The endpoint of this movie wasn’t predictable, some things happened towards the end of this film that I wasn’t expecting at all(No spoilers)

Verdict

This was an easy and relaxing movie to watch. The music, Grace Davis’s costume acting, storyline, and pacing delivered in this film and I would rate the high note 4.5 out of 5 and I think you should see it.
